Jungle Expedition Leader Courses (JELC) are aimed at those Expedition Leaders wishing to take their training a stage further, and the courses have been designed in close consultation with the Expedition Advisory Center of the Royal Geographical Society.

Each course consists of 2 x 4 day modules with a changeover day in between. It is possible to take one or both modules, depending on individual time available and requirements. The courses concentrate on both the soft skills and hard skills required of an expedition leader, with the final practical expedition phase taking place on the islands to the south of Batam.

The modules will cover the following subjects in depth:

Module 1 covers the soft skills aspects of expeditions, and will be based entirely at the specially constructed Jungle Training Center on Pulau Rempang. Subjects covered will include: Environmental Issues, Project Management, Logistics, Risk Assessment and Crisis Management, Social and Cultural Issues, Psychological Issues, Communications Procedures, Expedition Planning and Preparation.

Module 2
concentrates on the hard skills aspects. Subjects covered will include: Base Camp Siting and Selection, Expedition and Base Camp Health and Hygiene, Jungle Navigation, Emergency Procedures, Jungle Survival, Casualty Evacuation and River Crossing This module will take the form of a short practical expedition to the stunning and seldom visited island of Lingga (left), some 31/2 hours away by boat where skills learned during the first phase will be practiced in a realistic setting.

TAILOR MADE TREKS AND COURSES
Longer treks and courses can be tailored to suit your individual group or company needs, and can include expeditions to the southern islands of the Riau Archipelago. These expeditions are a perfect opportunity to learn in more detail about the jungle environment (especially if you want your expedition to be trained in the specifics of jungle expeditioning). They are perfectly suited to University Expedition groups or Expedition Teams wishing to train up or brush up on expedition skills prior to starting a main expedition (whether it be a scientific or exploratory expedition).

"In a nutshell, I thought it was excellent and very good value for money. We all felt the course was highly informative, well run and good fun! The people on the course had a range of travel/tropical experience but it seems everyone learned a lot and enjoyed the experience.

We all had complete confidence in Damian, who ran the course safely, efficiently and managed to pack a hell of a lot in, while imparting a greatdeal of information. He really knows his stuff and is very effective at communicating both the lessons that have to be learned and his love of the environment.

It is a telling testament that, despite our relative inexperience in a forest environment, no one suffered any injury or illness - be it from trips or falls, encounters with flora and fauna, ingesting
harmful bacteria or use of equipment like perangs"
